Berkley Historic Preservation Case Study: Craftsman Revival

Berkley, Michigan is known for its charming neighborhoods, walkable streets, and historic homes dating back to the 1920s and '30s. For homeowners who value authenticity but also crave modern functionality, restoring a historic property is a rewarding challenge. At VERSA Design, we specialize in historic preservation that honors architectural heritage while updating spaces for contemporary living. Our recent Craftsman Revival project in Berkley is a perfect example.

The Home: A 1927 Craftsman Bungalow

Nestled on a tree-lined street near downtown Berkley, this 1927 Craftsman bungalow featured hallmark details: tapered columns, original wood trim, and a cozy front porch. But inside, the layout was outdated, storage was limited, and previous renovations had stripped the home of much of its character.

Our client—a young couple relocating from Chicago—wanted to restore the soul of the home while making it livable for modern life. Their goals included:

  • Preserving original architectural details

  • Opening up the kitchen and dining area

  • Adding built-in storage solutions

  • Refreshing the bathroom with vintage appeal

Our Design & Renovation Approach

As part of our historic preservation and residential interior design services, we started with a detailed assessment of existing materials and structural integrity. We created a phased plan to retain what was original, restore what could be saved, and respectfully modernize the rest.

Key Enhancements:

  • Kitchen Remodel: Removed a non-original wall to create an open-concept kitchen-dining space. We selected Shaker cabinetry in a warm oak finish, soapstone countertops, and vintage-style hardware to reflect Craftsman-era authenticity.

  • Bathroom Remodel: Retiled with hex mosaic flooring and a subway-tiled shower surround. Installed a custom wood vanity and brass fixtures for timeless charm.

  • Space Planning: Integrated built-ins and bench seating to optimize storage without adding square footage.

  • Color Consultation: Chose a palette of sage green, creamy white, and deep rust—historically accurate and beautifully cohesive.
