Ann Arbor Modern Farmhouse Refresh: Balanced, Not Theme Park

Ann Arbor homeowners love to blend tradition with innovation—and that mindset inspired our recent modern farmhouse interior refresh in the heart of Washtenaw County. The goal? A home that felt warm, relaxed, and authentically Michigan—without leaning into overdone trends or Pinterest-perfect staging. At VERSA Design, we specialize in creating interiors that feel timeless, functional, and tailored to your life. This project was no exception.

The Challenge: Avoiding the Theme Park Trap
Our clients, a professional couple with two young kids, had recently purchased a 1990s colonial with good bones but dated finishes. While they were drawn to the modern farmhouse aesthetic, they didn’t want their home to feel like a replica of every white-and-black interior on social media. They asked us to bring in rustic charm and modern comfort—without falling into a cliché.
Our Design Philosophy: Modern Farmhouse, Refined
We approached this refresh with a focus on subtlety, durability, and character. Our interior design plan emphasized:
Natural materials: white oak flooring, soapstone countertops, and unlacquered brass hardware
Warm neutrals: soft greige walls, deep navy cabinetry, and layered textures
Space planning: reconfigured kitchen layout for better flow and more family-friendly dining
Custom furniture selection: American-made pieces with clean lines and heirloom quality
Color consultation: balancing crisp whites with earth tones to soften the contrast
Highlights of the Refresh
Kitchen Remodel
We replaced dated cherry cabinets with flat-paneled white oak, added a large prep island with hidden storage, and installed a matte black range hood for contrast. The backsplash? Handmade zellige tile that adds movement and texture without screaming for attention.
Mudroom & Entry
A built-in bench, wall hooks, and overhead storage cubbies made this busy drop zone both attractive and functional. Durable porcelain tile in a herringbone pattern adds a touch of old-world charm.
Primary Suite
We layered the bedroom with natural fiber rugs, linen window treatments, and a curated mix of antique and modern nightstands. The bathroom remodel included a walk-in shower with vertical subway tile, a custom vanity, and brass fixtures that will patina beautifully over time.
